A lineage of healing carried forward through five generations.

The story of Athreya Ayurvedic Centre begins long before the centre itself — in a family that lived, practiced, and protected Ayurveda for more than a century.
Each generation nurtured this tradition, adding their own contribution while preserving the purity of classical healing.
This is not just a family tree.
It is a Legacy Tree — a timeline of physicians, teachers, healers, and practitioners whose work laid the foundation for Athreya’s philosophy today.

The earliest roots of Athreya lie in the Kalari, the traditional Ayurvedic learning and healing space.
Here, Ayyappan Pillai Vaidyan and his predecessors practiced Ayurveda as a way of life.

Knowledge was passed orally
Herbs were collected fresh from forests
Healing was personal and deeply connected to nature
Students trained for years under a guru
Medicines were prepared by hand
This generation established the values that continue at Athreya: sincerity, precision, discipline, and compassion.
The first formal Ayurvedic healing centre in the family.
In 1921, the lineage evolved from traditional Kalari practice into a structured Ayurvedic centre with the founding of SNV Vaidyashala by Late V. K. Madhavan Pillai Vaidyan.

SNV Vaidyashala became known for:
This was one of the earliest examples of transforming ancient family practice into a recognisable clinical institution.
Classical diagnosis
Authentic traditional formulations
Disciplined herbal processing
Community trust built over decades
Strengthening the science of herbal medicine.
In 1960, Late Dr. V. R. Balakrishnan Nair expanded the family’s contribution to Ayurveda by establishing Balakrishna Pharmacy — a centre dedicated to preparing classical Ayurvedic formulations.

This generation deepened:
Today, this legacy continues through Dr. Girish, who carries forward the same disciplined approach to Ayurveda.
Medicine manufacturing
Quality standardisation
Herbal oil preparation
Research-backed practice
Dr. Girish and Dr. Padmadevi founded Athreya Ayurveda in 1996 with one clear goal: to offer Ayurveda exactly as it was meant to be — scientifically, compassionately, and without commercial dilution.

Physician-led treatment
In-house medicine preparation
Patient-focused care
Personalised diagnosis
Structured therapy protocols
Athreya became a trusted centre because of its sincerity, not scale.
Their approach introduced:
A globally trusted centre led by committed physicians.

Today, Athreya Ayurvedic Centre is guided by Dr. Sreejit and Dr. Jayalakshmi, who carry forward more than 100 years of family Ayurvedic wisdom while integrating:

Questions that come up after reading these stories
Classical Ayurveda approaches chronic conditions differently from conventional medicine — not by suppressing symptoms, but by identifying and addressing the root imbalance. Conditions like PCOS, autoimmune disorders, chronic pain, digestive dysfunction, stress-related illness, and metabolic disorders have responded well to sustained, physician-led Ayurvedic treatment. The results guests describe on this page come from personalised, medically supervised programmes — not generic spa therapies. Individual outcomes vary based on condition, duration, and commitment to the programme.
Athreya has welcomed guests from over 120 countries, and our team is experienced in supporting international visitors from arrival to departure. All physician consultations, treatment explanations, and daily care instructions are conducted in English. Pre-arrival communication, travel coordination, and post-departure follow-up are all handled by a dedicated team. Many of our long-term guests return from Europe, the USA, and Australia — and several have been coming back for years.
Most guests whose stories appear here stayed between 14 and 28 days. Ayurvedic healing — particularly Panchakarma — requires sufficient time for the body to complete each phase of detoxification and restoration. Shorter stays of 7–10 days can address specific concerns, but deeper, lasting results are typically seen with programmes of 14 days or more. Your care team will recommend a duration based on your health assessment and goals.
We respect the privacy of all our guests and do not share personal contact details. However, the stories shared on this page are a genuine reflection of what guests have experienced at Athreya. If you have specific questions about a condition or programme, our team is available for a pre-booking conversation — and in some cases, a online consultation with our physicians can be arranged to help you make an informed decision.
We would be honoured to hear from you. After your programme, our team will reach out with a brief feedback form. If you’d like to share your experience publicly — as a written testimonial, video, or review on TripAdvisor or Google — we’ll guide you through how to do that. Your story could be the reason someone else finally begins their healing journey.
