How to Prepare for Panchakarma Before You Arrive in Kerala

The weeks before your Panchakarma programme matter as much as the programme itself. Here’s how Athreya recommends preparing before you arrive in Kerala.

Panchakarma doesn’t begin the day you arrive at the centre. It begins in the weeks before, with how you prepare your body and mind for what’s ahead. Guests who arrive prepared consistently have a smoother, more effective experience than those who arrive straight from a demanding work schedule with no transition at all.

Two to Three Weeks Before

Start gradually reducing processed foods, alcohol, and caffeine. None of these need to disappear overnight, but easing off them beforehand means your system isn’t managing withdrawal and detoxification at the same time. It’s also worth beginning to shift toward simpler, warm, home-style meals if your regular diet is heavy in fried or processed food.

One Week Before

Avoid particularly heavy, rich, or hard-to-digest meals in the days immediately before travel. Try to get consistent sleep rather than compressing errands and work into the final nights before you fly. If you’re a habitual late-night eater, start shifting your last meal earlier — Ayurvedic routine places real importance on eating with the sun, and adjusting to this before you arrive makes the first few days easier.

Checklist for preparing for Panchakarma before you arrive at Athreya, Kerala: two to three weeks before, one week before, what to bring, and the right mindset

What to Bring

Bring your medical records, any recent blood work, and a complete list of current medications, including dosages. This isn’t a formality — it directly informs the diagnostic consultation that shapes your entire treatment plan. If you have a specific chronic condition, it’s worth writing down a brief history of how it has progressed and what’s already been tried, so nothing gets lost in translation during your first consultation.

Mentally Preparing

Panchakarma is not a spa holiday, and the guests who get the most out of it are the ones who arrive expecting a genuine medical process — one with early days that can feel demanding before they feel rewarding. Come with realistic expectations rather than a fixed idea of what “detox” should feel like, and be open to your physician adjusting the plan daily based on how your body actually responds.
