What Ayurveda Can and Cannot Do — An Honest Guide

What Ayurveda Can and Cannot Do — An Honest Guide

I have had the  privilege of treating health seekers from 123 nations since 2 decades. There is a question I am asked more often than any other.

By health seekers  who fly in to Athreya Ayurvedic centre  from around the world. By curious patients who have spent years searching for answers that Western medicine could not fully provide. By doctors who are curious but understandably cautious.

The question is simple. The honest answer is harder to find.

What can Ayurveda actually do?

Most content you will find online falls into one of two camps. The first makes extraordinary promises — miraculous recoveries in incurable diseases,, centuries of wisdom that modern medicine has somehow overlooked. The second dismisses the entire tradition as unscientific folklore.

Here we need to be realistic .. both extremes of bravado and contempt are dangerous

This is my attempt at something more useful.

What Ayurveda Is — And What It Is Not

Ayurveda is a classical system of medicine documented in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya & many more text books — comprehensive medical text books  covering cuases of diseases, their  diagnosis, treatment, suitable curative diet and preventive care.Ayurveda has eight branches as its speciality

It is not a collection of herbal home remedies only.

It is not a spiritual practice, though it has a deeply philosophical & spiritual foundation.

It is not incompatible with Western medicine — though the two come from very different frameworks.

At its core, Ayurveda understands each person as a unique physiological entity shaped by their constitution, their environment, their season, and their current state of imbalance. Treatment is always individualised. There are no one-size-fits-all protocols.

This is both its greatest strength and one of the reasons it does not translate easily into the clinical trial model, which typically requires standardised interventions applied to large groups.

What Ayurveda Can Genuinely Offer

Systematic Detoxification — Panchakarma

Panchakarma is Ayurveda’s flagship therapeutic system. It is a structured, multi-stage detoxification process that includes preparatory treatments, primary purification procedures, and a carefully supervised post-treatment regimen.

It is not a spa treatment. It is a medical protocol prescribed individually by a qualified Ayurvedic physician after proper  case taking , history taking & in person clinical examination.

When done correctly — under medical supervision, with appropriate duration, using properly prepared formulations — Panchakarma  supports the body’s natural capacity to eliminate accumulated metabolic waste, address chronic inflammatory states, and restore functional balance. It has to be followed by post Panchakarma recommendations of food and life style modifications.

Outcomes vary between individuals… factors that infunce are many .. co morbid states, chronicity  of disease,  age, constitution, current medications, complications of diseases if present ..and the nature of the condition all determine what is possible.

Support for Chronic and Inflammatory Conditions

Many health seekers who come to Athreya have been living with conditions that conventional medicine manages but does not always resolve — rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel conditions, metabolic syndrome, chronic fatigue, hormonal dysregulation, psoriasis  the list is long.

For these healthseekers, Ayurveda  offers a meaningful complementary approach. Not necessarily  always a  a replacement for existing treatment — but an additional dimension of care that addresses diet, lifestyle, sleep, stress, and the underlying physiological imbalances that western medicine medication does not always effectively target or resolve.

We work in tandem with Western medicine. Our approach is Integrated medicine. Many of our health seekers continue their prescribed medications during their stay, in close consultation with their treating physicians in home country.

Women’s Health — Hormonal Balance and Reproductive Wellness

Ayurveda has an extensive classical medical  literature on women’s health — far more sophisticated than most people realise. Conditions like, Adenomyosis , Endometriosis, hormonal imbalance, irregular cycles, PCOS ,perimenopause issues, and fertility challenges are addressed in Ayurvedic textbooks with specific, individualised protocols.

Under Dr. Jayalakshmi G. — our fifth-generation lineage holder who specialises in women’s health — we offer structured programmes for women seeking a holistic approach to these conditions. These include personalised dietary protocols, herbal formulations, and therapeutic treatments tailored to the individual.

We do not make statements of  unrealistic cure prospects of these conditions. We offer a systematic, medically supervised approach that many women find genuinely helpful.

Nervous System Recovery — Stress, Sleep, and Burnout

This is one of the important  area where Ayurveda’s impact is most consistently felt. The combination of structured rest, medicated oil therapies — particularly Shirodhara, the continuous flow of  herbal buttermilk or herbal milk or warm medicated oil   on the forehead — therapeutic diet, minimal stimulation, and a complete change of environment creates conditions in which the nervous system can genuinely recover.

Many healthseekers arrive describing exhaustion that a holiday trip elsewhere  does not cure or eradicate. Two to three weeks of systematic Ayurvedic care often produces a qualitative shift in energy, sleep quality, and mental clarity that surprises even the most sceptical visitors.

Rasayana  -Regeneration and Longevity, Preventive Care ,

Ayurveda’s regeneration branch medicine — called Rasayana — is one of its most sophisticated and least propagated branches. It includes protocols designed to support cellular regeneration, slow down the biological ageing, and strengthen the body’s innate capacity for self-repair.

At Athreya, we offer Kutee Praveshika Rasayana — one of the most intensive Rasayana protocols described in classical texts. Only three centres in the world offer this therapy authentically. It is a serious medical procedure, prescribed for appropriate candidates only.

Dr S P Sreejit, MD [Ayu] has underwent this on himself in 2014 & 2018 and is treating candidates for the same.

What Ayurveda Cannot Do

This section is just as important as the one above.

It Cannot Cure  all types of  Cancers

Ayurveda  does not have  treatment for all types of cancer. It cannot always replace surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or any evidence-based oncological treatment. When these aforesaid treatments are impossible to be physically & financially be feasible for any one , Ayurveda helps by improving the quality of life. Not all are able to accept chemotherapy , surgery and radiation therapy and not all are benefitted by these treatments. This where Integrated approach of the legendary late Dr C P Mathew Sir , MBBS MD DMR( father of integrated oncology) becoem relevant and useful in today’s world. Dr  S P Sreejit MD[Ayu] has documented case details of all patients of Dr C P Mathew Sir .

What Ayurveda may offer cancer patients is more than complementary supportive care  other than support for wellbeing, help get rid of side effects of chemotherapy, and make appropriate nutritional guidance. This must always be done in full transparency and in close coordination with the patient’s oncology team.

Any practitioner who tells a cancer patient that Ayurveda can cure all types of cancerous conditions is causing harm.

It Cannot Replace Emergency trauma care

If you are having a heart attack, a stroke, any acute medical  surgical emergency — you need ICU care. Immediately.

Ayurveda is more than  a system of chronic disease management, preventive care, and holistic rehabilitation.

It Cannot Be Self-Administered Safely Without Guidance

Many people buy Ayurvedic herbal products online without any knowledge of their body constitution, their current medications, or whether those products are appropriate for them.

If you are buying Ayurvedic products in the UK, only purchase those carrying the Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) certification. And always consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before beginning any herbal programme. Always inform your GP.

At Athreya, all formulations are prepared in our own pharmacy under medical supervision. We do not use products from unverified sources.

What to Look for in an Ayurvedic Centre

Given the genuine risks of unqualified practitioners and unregulated products, here is a brief practical guide.

When evaluating any Ayurvedic centre — in India,  or elsewhere — look for:

•       Qualified medical physicians with an MD in Ayurveda or atleast  graduation degree overseeing treatment — not only therapists or wellness practitioners.

•       NABH accreditation or equivalent recognised quality certification.

•       Full transparency about herbal formulations — what is used, where it comes from, how it is prepared.

•       Honest communication — any centre that promises cures or makes extraordinary claims without qualification is a clear warning sign.

•       Collaboration with conventional medicine — a good Ayurvedic physician will want to know your full medical history, your current medications, and will encourage you to keep your GP fully informed.

These are not optional standards. They are the minimum.

In Summary

Ayurveda, when practised authentically by qualified physicians, genuinely supports chronic disease management, systematic detoxification, hormonal balance, nervous system recovery, and long-term preventive health.

It cannot replace trauma care  emergency medicine..

Its greatest strength is — deep individualisation, and a framework that sees the whole person rather than isolated symptoms.

Its greatest risk — as practised commercially — is that it is frequently misrepresented by practitioners who promise too much without clinical evaluation and making unrelaistic prospects of cure . And by unregulated products that may be actively harmful.

Navigate carefully. Ask questions. Expect honesty from your practitioner.

If something sounds too good to be true, in Ayurveda as in everything else, it probably is.

Speak With Our Doctors

If you would like to know whether Ayurveda may be appropriate for your situation, Dr. SP Sreejit ,MD[Ayu] and Dr. Jayalakshmi offer online consultations for prospective guests.

We will be honest about what we can offer as results and what we cannot. We will ask about your medical history and current treatment. And if we do not think an Ayurvedic programme is right for you, we will tell you that too.

We always recommend consulting your GP or specialist alongside any Ayurvedic programme you are considering only if they are open minded for better results from other medical systems.
