A lineage of healing carried forward through six generations.

The story of Athreya begins in Vagasheri, where our family lived generations ago. According to family tradition, a Lada Guru of the Lada Parampara came to Vagasheri and stayed with the family. He shared his knowledge of medicine and left behind palm-leaf manuscripts describing the uses of medicines, which the family still preserves today.
From this beginning, the knowledge was carried forward for 180 years through six generations: from learning to practice, from practice to service, and from one generation to the next.
This is not just a family tree. It is a Legacy Tree, a timeline of the physicians and healers whose work laid the foundation for Athreya’s philosophy today.
Medicines were prepared by hand in the traditional way, patients were treated at home, and the physician travelled to wherever he was needed.
Medicines prepared by hand
Patients treated at home
Physicians travelling to their patients
Knowledge passed from teacher to student
Medicine as service.
His nephew, Kochunarayanapillai Vaidyan, practised in the same tradition. For him, medicine was a service to people rather than a means of earning.
The same classical tradition
Knowledge preserved within the family
Care offered as service
From home medicine to a dedicated pharmacy.
As the city grew, Madhavanpillai Vaidyan founded Sree Narayana Vilasam Balakrishna Pharmacy (S.N.V.) in 1921. This was the family’s move from medicines made at home to a dedicated pharmacy.

Trust built within the community
From 1960, V. R. Balakrishnan Nair brought professional education and organisation to Ayurveda, supporting the institutions that developed the discipline.

About the Athreya family’s six generations of Ayurveda
The Athreya family has practised Ayurveda for 180 years, across six generations. What began as medicine prepared at home and taken to patients grew into a pharmacy in 1921, and into Athreya Ayurvedic Centre in Pallom, Kottayam in 1996.
It began in Vagasheri. According to family tradition, a Lada Guru of the Lada Parampara came to Vagasheri and stayed with the family. He shared his knowledge of medicine and left behind palm-leaf manuscripts describing the uses of medicines, which the family still preserves today.
Krishnapillai Ayyappanpillai Vaidyan; his nephew Kochunarayanapillai Vaidyan; Madhavanpillai Vaidyan, who founded Sree Narayana Vilasam Balakrishna Pharmacy (S.N.V.) in 1921; V. R. Balakrishnan Nair, who brought professional education and organisation to Ayurveda from 1960; Dr. B. Girish and Dr. J. Padmadevi, who founded Athreya in 1996; and today, Dr. S. P. Sreejit and Dr. G. Jayalakshmi.
Dr. B. Girish and Dr. J. Padmadevi founded Athreya in 1996. They developed Athreya Pharmaceuticals and established Athreya Ayurvedic Centre in Pallom, Kottayam, to offer authentic Ayurveda in an environment made for it.
Athreya is guided today by Dr. S. P. Sreejit, MD (Ayu), Honorary Medical Director, and Dr. G. Jayalakshmi, BAMS, Director, who carries the family’s Ayurvedic lineage in its sixth generation. They combine this inherited knowledge with NABH medical standards and modern diagnostic support.
It means your care draws on 180 years of practical experience. Every programme starts with a personal diagnosis by our physicians, treatments follow classical Ayurvedic principles, and medicines are prepared with the same discipline the family has followed for generations.
