Our Story: Six Generations of Ayurveda in Kerala
Athreya Ayurvedic Centre did not begin as a business idea or a wellness concept. It began in a family home in Vagasheri, with palm-leaf manuscripts and a knowledge of healing that our family has carried forward for 180 years, across six generations.
Our Ancestors
For our ancestors, Ayurveda was a way of life before it was a profession. They prepared medicines by hand, treated patients in their homes and travelled to wherever they were needed. Medicine was a service to people, not a means of earning.
Healing was personal. Knowledge was sacred.
The bond between physician and patient was built on trust, time and attention. Knowledge was passed from one generation to the next, not as a curriculum but as lived practice. That relationship between healer and patient is still the centre of how we work today.
Where It Began: Vagasheri
According to our family tradition, a Lada Guru of the Lada Parampara came to Vagasheri and stayed with the family. He shared his knowledge of medicine and left behind palm-leaf manuscripts describing the uses of medicines, which the family still preserves today. His arrival marked the beginning of our family’s journey into Ayurveda. Krishnapillai Ayyappanpillai Vaidyan and his nephew Kochunarayanapillai Vaidyan carried that knowledge forward, and it has been passed down ever since.
Each generation added something new while keeping the knowledge intact.
As Ayurveda evolved in Kerala, so did our family’s contribution to it. Each generation added something meaningful, creating a continuous flow of knowledge and practice.
Sree Narayana Vilasam Balakrishna Pharmacy
Madhavanpillai Vaidyan founded S.N.V., moving the family from medicines made at home to a dedicated pharmacy.
Professional Ayurveda
V. R. Balakrishnan Nair brought professional education and organisation to Ayurveda, supporting the institutions that developed the discipline.

Dr. B. Girish and Dr. J. Padmadevi developed Athreya Pharmaceuticals and established Athreya Ayurvedic Centre in Pallom, Kottayam.

An Ayurvedic physician known for his clinical clarity, disciplined practice and deep knowledge of classical texts. He founded Athreya with one aim: precise diagnosis, honest treatment and Ayurveda without shortcuts.
Dr. J. Padmadevi, B.A.M
A physician with decades of government medical service and experience in chronic conditions and women’s health. Her patient-first approach still guides how every guest is cared for at Athreya.
The Athreya of Today
Today, Athreya is guided by Dr. S. P. Sreejit, MD (Ayu), Honorary Medical Director, and Dr. G. Jayalakshmi, BAMS, Director, the sixth generation of the family.
